North Carolina Registered Dietitian Nutritionists for Diabetes: Individualized Dietary Interventions to Improve Blood Sugar Control
Improve Blood Sugar Control With an Individualized Diabetes Diet Plan
Problems with blood sugar control are becoming increasingly common, even in children. Also learning that you have diabetes or pre-diabetes can come as quite a surprise. Although you can’t always ‘feel’ high blood glucose, the risks are very real. For instance, diabetes poses a risk of kidney disease, amputation, nerve damage, vision loss, and heart disease. Those risks, combined with the threat of life-long medication, can be quite scary to face.
However, there is good news: in most cases, with medical nutrition therapy and the guidance of a certified nutritionist, diabetes is reversible. For example, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, gestational diabetes, and metabolic syndrome can all be reversed with the right plan.
Even irreversible (autoimmune) conditions such as type 1 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) can greatly benefit from individualized dietary interventions, which can help control blood sugar levels.
A successful nutrition approach for diabetes, pre-diabetes and other similar health problems requires a root-cause assessment. The next step is implementing a diabetes diet plan that includes:
- Optimizing carbohydrate quality
- Fine tuning carbohydrate quantity
- Planning carbohydrate intake across the day
- Combining a carbohydrate plan with more broad diet optimization to reduce inflammation, optimize metabolism, and improve metabolic flexibility
- Optimizing gut health (yes, this is a huge driver!)
- Improving nutritional status (resolve common nutrient insufficiencies)
- Optimizing your exercise plan
- Achieving healthy weight loss if needed (link to this page)
- Addressing ancillary problems that throw off blood sugar (sleep, stress, environmental chemical exposures)
- And finally, developing specific meal plans and recipes, to keep stress low

Continuous Glucose Monitors
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) are one of the most powerful ways that we can optimize your blood sugar. A CGM is a device that you wear for 10 days. You get a continuous read of your blood sugar on your smart phone, so that you can see how your blood sugar responds to different foods and drinks. Your Registered Dietitian will help you evaluate this information, and will help you turn it into an actionable plan. You can learn more about our CGM monitoring HERE.
